Duce's sad puppy eyes: Puppy dog eyes mean something but not shame

Fitz has a great cartoon about how Duce tries to get a pass on his shameful budget.

However, the behavioral science on dog expressions indicates that "the response of laid-back ears, cowering posture, and droopy eyes isn’t connected to the shameful behavior." For both dogs and humans "locking eyes "brought on social rewarding effects due to oxytocin release in both humans and dogs and followed the deepening of mutual relationships, which led to interspecies bonding."" I guess Duce eyes might lead to bonding with Republican voters. But the look doesn't have anything to do with shame.
