Here is a call to action from the Sierra Club/Borderlands.
Senator McCain is pushing hard to gut all laws in Arizona to allow Customs and Border Patrol free rein to destroy our public and tribal lands and to install unlimited surveillance equipment throughout Arizona's borderlands. McCain is once again trying to use the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to sneak through a bill that will harm everyone in Arizona. This amendment to the NDAA (Amendment #1633) could come up as early as tomorrow. Sadly, Senator Carper from Delaware is making matters worse by supporting this bill that would turn Arizona into a lawless land.
Here is part of McCain's horrible amendment - emphasis added.
IN GENERAL.—To achieve border security on
(1) the Secretary and the Secretary concerned,
notwithstanding any other provision of law, shall
provide U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel with immediate access to Federal lands for border security activities,
"any other provision of law"? McCain is declaring vast parcels of Arizona land as a lawless frontier with one Sheriff - the Border Patrol. Think about being caught on federal land with no protection from the Bill of Rights with your "offense" being prosecuted, tried, convicted, and sentenced by the BP. McCain is not representing Arizona. Nor is his amendment in our best interests.
We need you to take action today by calling, faxing, or emailing some senators and telling them you care about Arizona's borderlands, public lands, and tribal lands. Ask them to STOP SUPPORTING NDAA AMENDMENT #1633 (Senator McCain's bill). Let them know that the people of Arizona deserve the same protection that the people from other states get from laws such as the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Civil Rights Act, and so many others.
