Trump on the cross: What blows up can melt down

John Cassidy (New Yorker) provides a summary of the evidence for his view that The election may be over, but Trump's blow up is just starting.. As part of that, Trump is trotting out conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory, looking for someone, anyone to blame for his likely defeat on November 8.. There is more evidence of all that in the transcript of his speech in West Palm carried by Time magazine. Here are some snippets from that speech.

Here's where he trots out one conspiracy theory.

The Clinton machine is at the center of this power structure. We’ve seen this first hand in the WikiLeaks documents, in which Hillary Clinton meets in secret with international banks to plot the destruction of U.S. sovereignty in order to enrich these global financial powers, her special interest friends and her donors.

(BOOING)

So true.

AUDIENCE: Lock her up, lock her up, lock her up.

TRUMP: Honestly, she should be locked up.

(APPLAUSE)

Should be locked up.

Trump returned to the same theme time after time.

This election will determine whether we are a free nation or whether we have only the illusion of democracy, but are in fact controlled by a small handful of global special interests rigging the system, and our system is rigged. This is reality, you know it, they know it, I know it, and pretty much the whole world knows it. The establishment and their media enablers will control over this nation through means that are very well known. Anyone who challenges their control is deemed a sexist, a racist, a xenophobe, and morally deformed.

(BOOING)

They will attack you, they will slander you, they will seek to destroy your career and your family, they will seek to destroy everything about you, including your reputation. They will lie, lie, lie, and then again they will do worse than that, they will do whatever is necessary. The Clintons are criminals, remember that. They’re criminals.

(BOOING)

AUDIENCE: Lock her up! Lock her up! Lock her up!

He goes on to deny the most recent allegations of sexual misconduct. And introduces another conspiracy theory as evidence.

AUDIENCE: Trump! Trump! Trump!

TRUMP: Thank you, thank you. But, let me state this as clearly as I can, these attacks are orchestrated by the Clintons and their media allies. The only thing Hillary Clinton has going for herself is the press, without the press, she is absolutely zero.

(BOOING)

TRUMP: And you saw that the other night in the debate, where some people said she made virtually a fool of herself. This is not presidential material, believe me. What they say is false and slanderous in virtually every respect. We are now less than a month from the most election of our lifetime. Indeed one of the most important elections in the history of our country. And the polls are showing us in a dead heat. Don’t believe what you say

Trump puts himself on the cross in a couple of ways and along the way indulges in some projection.

[Obama has] led a very divided nation and it’s only gotten worse. And the last thing our country needs is four more years of Barack Obama, believe me. I’ve seen first hand the corruption and the sickness that has taken over our politics. You’ve seen it and I’ve seen it and we’re all watching together.

They knew they would throw every lie they could at me and my family and my loved ones. They knew they would stop at nothing to try to stop me. But I never knew, as bad as it would be, I never knew it would be this vile, that it would be this bad, that it would be this vicious.

Nevertheless, I take all of these slings and arrows gladly for you.

(APPLAUSE)

TRUMP: I take them for our movement so that we can have our country back.

...

In my former life I was in insider, as much as anybody else. And I knew what it’s like, and I still know what it’s like to be an insider. It’s not bad, it’s not bad. Now I’m being punished for leaving the special club and revealing to you the terrible things that are going on having to do with our country. Because I used to be part of the club, I’m the only one that can fix it.

Later Trump repeats his remarks about African-Americans.

TRUMP: So they have no jobs, they have horrible education, they have no safety or security, and I say to the African-American community, what the hell do you have to lose? I will fix it — I will fix it, I will make it good, I’ll bring back our jobs. We’ll have good education, we’ll have great safety in the inner city.

I trust you see the symbolism here. Trump, the only one, the one taking "slings and arrows gladly for you." It'sTrump poking at the emotional religious guts of his followers. Trump the crucified. Trump the messiah. Trump the Christ. Trump has risen.

Except that he's melting down. (Check out the Time magazine cover.)

But in the process of being handed a defeat he intends to take America down with him. John Cassidy again.

[Trump's] blitzkrieg strategy makes no sense, of course. If there is one thing that is guaranteed to get Democrats to the polls, it is the sight of Trump going around the country for the next three and half weeks inciting bigotry and racial hatred, launching personal attacks on his opponents, and generally acting like a deranged person. But, as my colleague Ryan Lizza pointed out on Wednesday, there is reason to believe that Trump’s true motivation is no longer winning: it is finding someone to blame for his upcoming defeat.

Trump is now casting about, trying to fill this role. Just about anybody will do, be it Ryan and the Republican establishment, the Clinton campaign, the media, or the wealthy donors backing his opponent. In Trump’s speech in West Palm Beach, which elevated his conspiratorial rhetoric to new levels of rabble-rousing and paranoia, he lumped all these groups together and portrayed himself as the victim of “a small handful of special global interests rigging the system.” Then he went on:

This is reality. You know it, they know it, and pretty much the whole world knows it. The establishment and their media neighbors wield control over this nation through means that are very well known. Anyone who challenges their control is deemed a sexist, rapist, xenophobe, and morally deformed. They will attack you. They will slander you. They will seek to destroy your career and your family. They will seek to destroy everything about you, including your reputation. They will lie, lie, lie, and then again they will do worse than that.

That's classic projection, putting his qualities on others.

If this were a boxing match, the referee would stop the fight and send Trump back to his corner. Since there are no T.K.O.s in politics, we’ll have to put up with it for another few weeks. Some of the tension may have gone out of the race. But with Trump busy whipping things up, the level of acrimony and bile is still building.
