What does it mean to have a highly ranked school?

David Safier explains how attrition in a selective charter school leads to high performance and thus high rankings.  The seniors who survive are by definition high performers.  There is nothing mysterious that could not be predicted from a class on research methods in social and behavioral science.  But that is, I think, Safier's point.  Claims of superiority by one school or another need to be subjected to critical review.
